I enjoy working with students from Year 2 through to Year 11. I am very flexible in terms of the sessions I can provide, depending on your school’s priorities, but like to keep a focus on motivating students as both readers and writers.
As a children’s author and educationalist, I’ve got a great understanding of the role of reading in schools and how it can help to drive achievement. I have taught secondary English, worked as an educational publisher developing resources for the English classroom, and, as a freelance education consultant, worked with organisations such as the National Strategies and Booktrust writing publications about improving and promoting reading. I have appeared at literary festivals such as the Hay Festival and Oxford Literary Festival, run creative writing workshops at the British Library, and also gave the keynote speech on reading at the 2014 National Association for the Teaching of English conference.
My sessions can include:
- an author talk where I talk about my books from initial inspiration to publication, giving insights into the writing process and providing advice for aspiring authors. This session can focus on either my fiction or non-fiction writing, or a combination of the two, and include readings from my work, time for students to ask questions and a book signing.
- a writing workshop where I share some of the strategies and techniques I use in my own writing and give students opportunities to try these out, engaging them in a range of creative activities and developing their enthusiasm for writing. If access to the internet is available, this session can also explore some of the ways in which I use online tools and resources as a writer.
I can also run training sessions for teachers exploring strategies for promoting reading for pleasure, getting reluctant students reading and building a reading culture across the school, drawing on the work I have done for the National Strategies and other educational organisations.
For school visits, I charge fees in line with the Society of Authors’ recommended rates - please contact me for details. I am a member of NAWE (National Association of Writers in Education) and have public liability insurance. I am also available for other events, such as library visits, bookshop talks and festival appearances. For more information or to arrange a visit, please email me or use the contact page.
Christopher Edge brought tales of mystery and adventure to life through some really innovative activities. We'd definitely invite Christopher back for future events and look forward to working with him again.
The children have not stopped writing since your visit! Thank you for a fabulous session which inspired both our pupils and staff!
Christopher Edge really knows how to get children reading
